Just after 10 p.m. on July 4, celebration turned to desperation in Merrillville, Ind. as a pedestrian bridge collapsed, sending about 50 people plunging into the water below.
Ambulances immediately responded and took around 25 people to local hospitals. Rescue operations lasted for three hours.
According to reports, the bridge was designed to hold about 40 people at one time. When the bridge collapased, some witnesses estimated there were at least 150 people on it.
