REPORTING FROM THE ILLINOIS STATE FAIRGROUNDS — I’m out at the Illinois State Fair as a matter of work. But it has given me a chance to explore the strange, tasteful, and sometimes tasteless world of state fair fair. Above you will see a Vose corn dog. The corn dog was the original food on a stick and now seems tamed compared to its offspring like deep-fried Coke on a stick, Pizza on a stick and in Iowa, battered and deep-fried butter on a stick. I’m not even sure how that last one would turn out. I love butter and batter and the occasionally deep-fried treat, but butter? That just seems like it would be too rich to even enjoy.
Back to the corn dog.
This was the first one I’d had in a while, and while I usually skip any form of hot dog after bad experiences as a child, I’ve got to admit this was pretty good. It avoided the major fault of any lackluster dog, sogginess. The batter was hot and crispy. The hot dog played second fiddle to the batter, and the $3 price tag seems like a huge market up, but overall, I’d have another one, and I just might.
